WK7 - Coaching SMEs to Facilitate Learning: Techniques to Improve Their Performance

Sat, May 18 | 8:30 AM - 4:30 PM | Room: 202 A, Convention Center

Subject matter experts (SMEs) bring expertise to the training room. Unfortunately, some don't fully understand their new role as facilitator of learning. This risks the success of the learning event. In this workshop, you'll explore instructional design and nonthreatening ways to coach SMEs to deliver content, provide on-the-job relevance, set up and debrief learning activities successfully, and tell stories for impact.

Application on the Job:
Position training with SMEs as a conversation to be facilitated rather than a speech, and make the case that SMEs need to be TD savvy.
Use a framing strategy to help SMEs plan for and manage the learning conversation.
Coach SMEs to develop their communication skills; set up, conduct, and debrief learning activities; and tell relevant stories for impact.
